A claim is not the same as evidence
Learning goal: Describe the difference between what someone says and what supports it.
A claim is something a person or post says is true. Evidence is the information we can examine to judge that claim, such as a document, direct observation or data whose source and method are clear.
An emotional statement or a large number of shares does not automatically make a claim reliable. The person sharing it might be sincere and still be mistaken.
Ask: What exactly is being claimed? Who knows this? How did they find out? What could contradict it? Those questions improve understanding without requiring you to become an expert.
Practice
Find an ordinary, low-stakes claim in a public post. Identify the claim in one sentence, then list what evidence would help check it.
Do this privately, in a notebook or on your own device. Nothing you write is collected by this site.
