Listen before proposing a solution
Learning goal: Ask open questions without assuming the community’s priorities.
A project begins with a need that people recognize, not with a poster announcing a solution. Ask open questions and make space for those who might normally be overlooked.
Do not demand personal stories or names. People can contribute their views without agreeing to be quoted, photographed or included in publicity.
Compare what you heard with available local resources. A group already doing useful work may need support more than the community needs another new initiative.
Practice
Write three open questions you could ask neighbours about a non-sensitive community issue. Include one question about existing support.
Do this privately, in a notebook or on your own device. Nothing you write is collected by this site.
